Sun Valley Confirms Return of One of the World's Biggest Ski Racing Events in 2027

The Idaho ski resort hosted the big show at the end of last winter.

Once wasn’t enough.

In March 2027, the alpine racing World Cup Finals will return to Sun Valley, Idaho, drawing a crowd of elite racers and excited onlookers for one of the biggest events of the year.

The show last appeared at the ski resort in 2025, hosting multiple standout moments. After returning from a serious abdominal injury, American star Mikaela Shiffrin won the slalom race there. Amid a fairytale comeback at age 40, the famed skier Lindsey Vonn took second in the super-G, becoming the oldest woman in history to stand on a FIS Alpine World Cup podium.

Pete Sonntag, COO of Sun Valley Resort, in a news release, said that bringing the World Cup finals back to the mountain “is both a tremendous honor and a testament to the dedication of our team, the vision of our owners, and the support of the community.”

North American stops on the World Cup racing circuit are less common than their European counterparts. Only three appeared on the continent this winter, and the rest of the races this season are abroad.

But the latest Sun Valley finals, Sonntag continued, “proved that North American resorts can deliver a world-class racing experience with unmatched spirit and hospitality, and we’re excited for the opportunity to represent again in 2027.”

Sophie Goldschmidt, president and CEO of U.S. Ski & Snowboard, said, “Sun Valley delivers an experience that athletes, fans, and the international ski world embrace. We’re proud to once again showcase the best of U.S. alpine racing at this iconic destination.”

The release didn’t share many more details about the Sun Valley finals, noting that more information will be available in the coming months.

In 2025, the event was held at the Warm Springs Base Area. The race courses—from downhill to slalom—varied in length, but they followed approximately the same path and finished near the base of the Challenger Lift.

A local news outlet, the Idaho Mountain Express, previously reported that Sun Valley also hoped to host the World Cup finals in 2029.
