Press release below:
"Non-profit organization Make Life Skate Life (MLSL), in partnership with Climate Skaters Kiteezi and Uganda’s growing skateboarding community, is proud to announce the launch and upcoming construction of the Kiteezi Skatepark, set to become Uganda’s first public, international-standard concrete skatepark.
The project emerges at a pivotal moment for Kiteezi. The recent collapse of the Kiteezi landfill claimed lives, displaced families, and intensified longstanding environmental challenges. The catastrophe highlighted the urgent need for safe public spaces, environmental awareness, and youth-centered community support. Building on a 90 m² DIY skate spot created by local youth in 2023, MLSL and Climate Skaters Kiteezi are now partnering to develop a 450 m² concrete skatepark, accompanied by a community classroom constructed from a repurposed shipping container.
The new facility will serve over 100 young people weekly, with a focus on girls’ participation, environmental education, and empowerment through sport. The initiative is rooted in local leadership and driven by community organizer Cynthia Kemigisha, Founder & Director of Climate Skaters Kiteezi.
Fundraising and site preparation are underway throughout December 2025. Construction is scheduled to begin in early January 2026, with the skatepark inauguration and launch of community programming planned for February 2026.
An international build team, equally composed of women and men, has been confirmed, reflecting MLSL’s commitment to gender inclusion and female leadership in skatepark construction. Preparations are underway for a collaborative, community-driven construction process involving local youth and volunteers.
Shout out to Kaspar Van Lierop for putting this one on our radar.
